Auel, Tarek to speak at WG

Notable Mensans Jean M. Auel and Tarek Saab have added their expertise to the WG program.

Auel, the internationally best-selling author of the Earth's Children series that began with "The Clan of the Cave Bear," will present "30,000 Years Ago: The Way the World Was Then." The series has been translated into more than 30 languages. She is presently working on Book #6. Jean and her husband, Ray, have been members of Mensa for more than 35 years.

One of 2006's most visible Mensans, "The Apprentice" contestant Tarek Saab will "talk Trump" at his presentation on the reality behind reality television. Since being "fired" from the show, Saab has written a book, gotten married and started his own company.

Swing band slated for WG Anniversary Gala

Do not miss your chance to groove to the sounds of Michael Andrew and Swingerhead at the WG's premier event — the Gala Dance! Everyone is invited to hear the man who, with his highly sought-after band of zoot-suited virtuosos, was named Best Local Entertainer by Orlando Magazine's "Best of Orlando 2005" readers' poll and who wowed New York as headliner at the famous Rainbow Room. We are lucky to be able to snag Michael before he begins his Broadway run, so this is an incredible 60th anniversary gift to you!

The World Gathering is well on its way to living up to its billing as Mensa's biggest party in decades. Almost 2,000 Mensans from 20 countries had registered to attend as of June 21.

World-class Hospitality Challenge launched

Nothing pleases Mensans more than a challenge. A huge challenge for the World Gathering 2006 committee, aside from providing exciting programs, stimulating tours and surroundings conducive to what we do best — talk — is to enhance all that with an array of food items that are nonperishable and prepackaged but tasty, nourishing and fun. If we’re not serving full meals in the Hospitality area, what do we do to help Mensans feed their bodies while they feed their brains? Help the WG Committee rise to this challenge! A Horse of a Different Color

Yes, Mensans, there will be food and beverages round the clock in the Popola Placo* during the World Gathering 2006. And, yes, the edibles and potables will be different than any gathering you’ve ever attended. But then the WG06 will be different than any gathering you’ve ever attended. And there never will be another event that combines (a) the celebration of Mensa’s 60th anniversary; (b) American Mensa’s Annual General Meeting; (c) the annual meeting of the International Board of Directors; (d) a meeting of the American Mensa Committee; and (e) super-sized opportunities to meet Mensans from all over the globe.

In fact, let’s begin by saying that the word "hospitality" doesn’t quite describe what you will find in the Popola Placo*. Not only will there be non-perishable food and drink at all hours, you can expect that this area of the Coronado Springs Resort will be warm and inviting so that you can meet your friends and go on to other events in the hotel or to one of the parks or park yourself for an extended stay. Expect that the seating arrangements will be conducive to conversation (and that’s what we’re all about, isn’t it?). Expect our Hospitality Committee to discover new ways to tempt the most discerning Ms and to surprise us with mouth-watering treats. Do not expect to dine throughout the WG here — there are planned meals and lots of restaurants nearby; why not try the Pepper Market or the Maya Grill or any one a zillion eateries in Disney World? Expect entertainment in the Popola Placo*. Magicians? Astrologers? Jugglers? Mimes? Could be one or all.

Yes, it’s different, but then Disney World is different, the 60th anniversary is different, and the opportunity to meet Mensans from 50 countries is certainly different. Why expect that Hospitality will be the same as any past gathering?

Check the WG Web site often: WG06.us.mensa.org. There will be menus for both the planned meals and the Popola Placo* posted as soon as they are available. We welcome your suggestions — just don’t suggest Aunt Mabel’s potato salad or Uncle Harry’s baked beans. We love them both, bless their hearts, but their culinary efforts are not appropriate for this gathering. Little Debbies, however, are extremely appropriate! Just kidding! There will be healthy foods as well as, well, the junk food.

*Popola Placo is Esperanto for "people place." Since we are going global, our meeting place needs a more worldly label. Other suggestions? It’s not engraved on the hotel’s bulletin board as yet. Email Elissa Rudolph with your comments.
